Historic Colonial Hotel
Holds Planning Meeting

MEYERSDALE -- Over 25 people from across Pennsylvania and with a wide variety of backgrounds gathered in Meyersdale on Thursday, October 14, 2004, to plan the future of the Historic Colonial Hotel. The results of the meeting set the course for a vibrant and community-centered redevelopment of the former hotel building.

Attendees represented a wide variety of organizations and businesses, including the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development; Pennsylvania Downtown Center; Somerset County Redevelopment Authority; Somerset County Economic Development Council; Somerset County Chamber of Commerce; Allegheny Trails Alliance; Meyersdale Renaissance, Inc.; Meyersdale Area Historical Society; Borough of Meyersdale; F.B. Thomas Drug Store, Inc.; Di and Di Apartments; Citizens National Bank; EADS Group Architects; First National Bank; Clapper’s Industries, Inc.; and Clapper’s Building Materials.

The meeting started with brief introductions and the premier of the documentary, Historic Colonial Hotel: A Century of Elegance. Attendees then toured the building. The planning meeting itself took place across Main Street at the recently remodeled Main Street Inn. Here attendees broke into three groups to discuss and rank possible uses for the building. The entire assembly reconvened to discuss and rank the uses a whole.

Attendees agreed that the building is large enough to host a variety of uses. Indeed, many commented that it is really two buildings: one consisting of the public spaces on the first floor and basement, the second spanning the more private areas on the second through fourth floors. Among the ideas receiving the most support were a hotel/bed and breakfast; short-term-stay suites; and an events center.

Property owners Cheria Yost and Adam Thomas will now develop a series of proposals based on suggestions from the meeting, seeking the continued input of this group. The owners wish to thank all of those who attended the meeting. Their contributions will provide the foundation for the Historic Colonial Hotel’s rehabilitation and return to its role as Meyersdale’s cultural center.
